Me: “So how do you feel about starting school?”
kiddo: “Disturbed. I’m starting fifth grade which means I’m going to start going through puberty.”
Me: “So how do you feel about starting school?”
kiddo: “Disturbed. I’m starting fifth grade which means I’m going to start going through puberty.”
kiddo: “Nicole, can I have a break your teeth?”
Me: “A what?’
kiddo: “Can I have a break your teeth?”
Me: “Oh, you mean a jawbreaker?”
“My dad went inside the tornado and pulled everyone out. I was like ‘Dad don’t do it, you’ll get hurt!’ But he did it.”
I lost my voice yesterday. Completely gone.
Try teaching second graders on a Friday before winter break…during a week where they had two snow days (which are surprisingly unheard of in Minneapolis) IN A WHISPER!
Anyway… after school, I babysit these adorable 4 year old twins and their 6 year old sister.
When I picked up the twins, one of them said,
“I’m going to go to your school and talk to that boy who took your voice!”
“Really? What are you going to say?”
“Oh, I’ll give him a good talking to.”
kiddo: “Can I get a drink of water?”
Me: “Just wait one more minute until I finish giving the class instructions.”
…5 minutes later (I forgot).
kiddo: “I’m very thirsty.
Then I start to get sweaty.
Then I get sick.
Then I throw up.”
From two 8th graders two weeks ago…
“Are you Asian?” Classmate: “Yeah. Are you Asian or are you white?”
From a first grader this morning…
Kiddo: “Do you speak Spanish?”
Me: “No, but I wish I did.”
Kiddo: “Did you speak it when you were little?”
Me: (because I knew where this was going…) “No but do I look like I would?”
Kiddo: “Yeah. And you also look like you’re from China.”
